Wheat, Canola, Barley
Requirements of Ausbulk
Kangaroo Island grain growers produce between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes of grain per year. The product was transported to Adelaide via semi-trailer trucks which were transported from Kangaroo Island to the mainland on roll-on-roll-off ferries. Because of limitations of ferry space it was difficult to move the material in the time required and the cost was excessive. Environmental considerations were paramount because the conveyor system was installed on a jetty which is open to the public and adjacent to tourist facilities. The system had to:
- fill the barge at low and high tides and range as high as 7 metres;
- swing through 121° to fill the barge extremities;
- provide electrical winch control to raise and lower the boom to reduce manual operator involvement.
